River Cruise Deals in Europe
Why the river you choose shapes the offers you will see.
Get Free River Cruise Deal QuotesRiver cruise deals in Europe vary more by river than by line. The number of ships on a river, the length of its season and how often its water levels misbehave all shape what kind of offer you are likely to see.
River by River
| River | What sails there | Deal outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Rhine | Amsterdam to Basel, the castle-lined Middle Rhine, Christmas markets | Many ships and many lines, so plenty of competing offers. |
| Danube | Passau, Vienna, Budapest, the Wachau Valley; some Black Sea voyages | The other busy river; wide choice of departures and offers. |
| Main and the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal | Grand journeys between Amsterdam and Budapest | Long sailings; offers often focus on early booking. |
| Moselle | Cochem, Bernkastel, Trier; often combined with the Rhine | Usually sold within Rhine itineraries. |
| Seine | Paris to Normandy | Fewer ships; popular dates fill steadily. |
| Rhône and Saône | Lyon, Avignon, Arles, Burgundy wine country | Fewer ships; harvest-time dates in demand. |
| Douro | Porto into the Douro Valley, toward Spain | Small ships and a limited fleet; harvest dates go early. |
| Elbe | Berlin and Potsdam to Dresden and Prague | Few ships, and low water can disrupt summer sailings. |

How to Read a European River Cruise Deal
- Check the direction and embarkation city. The same route sold in reverse can be priced differently.
- Look at the shoulder months. Early spring and late autumn are cooler, quieter and often where offers cluster.
- Ask about water levels. On the Rhine, Danube and Elbe a dry summer can mean a coach transfer or a ship swap. Our sister site River Cruising Safety explains how lines handle it.
- Count the transatlantic flights. An air-inclusive offer on one line can beat a bigger cruise-only saving on another.
Shore time matters as well; for ports and independent touring, see our Europe Port Excursions site. Every European river site we run is listed in the Official River Cruise Directory.
Same River, Different Value
On the busiest European rivers, several companies may sail almost the same route in the same week. That is where comparison pays off most. A Rhine sailing between Amsterdam and Basel, for instance, can be offered by a premium line that includes wine with meals and one tour per port, by an all-inclusive line that also covers drinks and gratuities, and by a line that charges for more of the extras. The fares will differ, the offers will differ, and the total cost of the week may differ in the opposite direction.
- Compare lines on the same river and the same week, so the only differences are the ship and the fare.
- List what each fare includes before you look at the offer attached to it.
- Check where each ship docks in the big cities — central moorings save taxi time and cost.
If you are still choosing between companies, our sister site Best River Cruising sets out how to compare them.
